Breathing Easier through Air Monitoring (BEAM)
The BEAM project provides a unique opportunity for the Portland community to find out about its air during any given
hour, day, or month. In the past, Portland residents have had to wait over a year to find out about air pollution in their neighborhoods
via the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP) Annual Air Quality Report. Air pollution in Portland, as in other areas
of Maine, does sometimes reach unhealthy levels.

Environmental Protection Agency
EPA's Indoor Environments Division has launched a national public education and prevention program in response to the asthma
epidemic in the United States. The goal of the Asthma and Indoor Environments outreach program is to raise public
awareness of indoor environmental asthma triggers (e.g., secondhand smoke, dust mites, mold, pet dander, and cockroaches) and actions
that can be taken to reduce children's exposure to them in homes, schools and child care settings. The EPA is working to insure that
environmental management is fully incorporated into all asthma education and disease management programs.
The EPA Office of Research and Development has announced the availability of a new report,
the Asthma Research Strategy. The Asthma Research Strategy serves to guide the planning of EPA
research efforts led by the Office of Research and Development (ORD) to address the significant issues of exposures, effects, risk assessment,
and risk management of environmental pollutants relevant to asthma. The report highlights significant information gaps in each of these
areas, prioritizes the research needs, and proposes advisory guidelines indicating how available resources can be utilized to advance scientific
knowledge and control environmental factors that contribute to asthma prevalence and severity.
